Wheddon Cross is a thriving, friendly rural community with a cattle market, playing field that has an all-weather tennis / netball / basketball court, and a children’s play area. In the older part of the village (Cutcombe) are the church and school. The Coleridge Way walk passes through Wheddon Cross.

The village is an excellent base to explore Exmoor from on foot or bike, with both circular and linear trails to discover the moors from. Local events include the Snowdrop Valley in February, the Cutcome Horse Show and Gymkhana in June, and the Village Fete in August.

Things To Do Near Withypool

Withypool is set in the heart of Exmoor and is surrounded by walks all over the moors, along the River Barle to Landacre Bridge or Tarr Steps. The Two Moors Way passes through the village and there are a number of excellent short walks including a 9 mile circular route down the river to Tarr Steps returning high over Withypool Hill with many superb views en-route.

Beside the old, 6-arch stone Withypool Bridge over the River Barle is a picnic spot with a small car park. There is a lovely riverside walk north from here towards Landacre and Simonsbath.

Explore the River Barle which passes through the valley, rising only a few miles to the west at Pinkery Pond. Pinkery Pond was also built by by John Knight, but it is not certain for what reason.

Explore a local sawmill that the National Park restored and is now used to cut sessile oak for signs and gates. It’s powered from a leat getting water further upstream of the river. On the other side of the road is Boevey’s tearooms. There is a good-sized car park where several good walks start from. Another nearby option is Wild About Exmoor.

Porlock encompasses a stunning sea marsh, designated an SSSI. It is part of the 630-mile South West Coast Path and The Coleridge Way Walk, a 51-mile walk across Exmoor. Mountain biking in the area offers some of the best trails, with its hilly climbs and steep descents. A vast network of bridleways across Exmoor offer riders superb horse riding while thrill seekers can try kayaking, paddle boarding, coasteering, mountain climbing or abseiling. There are plenty of things to do near Lynton and Lynmouth if you’re on the hunt for the best that Exmoor has to offer! Hop on the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway which connects the two towns and witness some of Exmoor most breathtaking panoramic views. 

Just down the coast lies the Valley of Rocks, a fascinating U-shaped dry valley that is parallel to the sea. It lies about ½ mile to the west of Lynton and is part of the South West Coast Path. It is well known for its feral goats that roam freely and often quite hair-raisingly on the jagged cliff edges! There is a tea room serving a range of refreshments and a picnic area. It is also home to probably the most idyllic setting for a cricket club ground. 

Watersmeet House is a former fishing lodge located in Lynmouth and used today as an information centre, tea room and shop by the National Trust, who have owned it since 1996. The fishing lodge, which dates from approximately 1832, stands at the bottom of a deep gorge at the confluence of the East Lyn River and Hoar Oak Water. The site has been a tea garden since 1901. Watersmeet House is the starting-off point for some 40 miles (approximately 65 km) of woodland, streamside and seaside walks.

Looking for things to do near Dunster? Well it’s your lucky day! This medieval village and the surrounding area offers plenty of activities and experiences  suitable for everyone.
 
Approximately 1 mile away is Dunster Station on the West Somerset Railway, a 20-mile heritage railway which runs from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard. 
 
From the village you can take a number of stunning walks into the Exmoor hills and explore Conygar Tower and the Iron Age Heritage at Bat’s Castle. If you are lucky you may catch sight of a Red Deer or Exmoor Pony! England’s Tallest Tree is in walking distance, as is the start of the South West Coast Path at Minehead and the new Steam Coast Bike Trail.
 
The large priory church is in the centre of the village and has a carillon of bells which ring every four hours. Nearby is the Dunster Working Watermill and close to that is the ancient Gallox Bridge, a pack-horse bridge over the River Avill. Why not take a stroll around the Memorial and Village Gardens, or let the kids paddle in the river or let off steam in our award-winning Packhorse Playground?
 
Dunster Museum houses a brand-new exhibition space documenting Dunster’s 10,000-year history. There are many interesting items to discover, including Roman pottery and brooches found at Dunster Beach. It also houses the largest collection of dolls outside the V&A!

Things To Do Near Combe Martin

Combe Martin is popular for kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. Hire a kayak or take a tour with Surfside Kayak Hire or OSKC Watersports. You can also hire stand-up paddle boards in the village to paddle around the sheltered bay with a chance of meeting some friendly dolphins.

The South West Coast Path passes through the village offering spectacular walking. Leaving the village towards Lynmouth gives you one of the highest climbs on the whole coast path, up to Little Hangman and then on to Great Hangman, both rewarding you with marvellous views. In the other direction, towards Ilfracombe the path is a little gentler taking you to the sheltered Watermouth Cove and the Watermouth Castle attraction.

Take a trip to the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, a subtropical paradise with hundreds of birds and animals, and animatronics dinosaurs. There is also the Exmoor Zoo to explore.

There is an informative museum highlighting the village’s heritage. And of course, you can just relax in the sun on the beach and watch the sun go down over the horizon in the evening. There is wheelchair access to the beach from the main car park or the road. Combe Martin is creating a new BBQ area which is being built this season at the top of the beach.
