Cow Castle is an Iron Age hill fort in the River Barle valley. It can be reached on foot on an easy walk, 2 miles from Simonsbath alongside the River Barle. It can also be included on an 8 mile circular walk which takes in Picked Stones, and the old copper mine at Wheal Eliza. It is not clear what these hill forts were used for. They might have been a defensive position for the local community or a safe haven for cattle overnight.
Facilities: None at the location, car park and toilets at Simonsbath.
