An ancient clapper bridge possibly dating back to 1000BC. It is a Grade 1 listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument. It crosses the River Barle about 6.5 miles upstream from Dulverton. In recent years the swollen river has dislodged the 1-2 ton slabs which have been carefully replaced into their original positions.

Facilities: car park and toilets plus Tarr Farm Inn provides drinks, food and light refreshments.

There is usually a delightful 1.8 mile, 1 hour walk upstream to cross by a footbridge to return the other side of the river, however as of May 2025 until further notice, the Bridge at Hinds Pitt upstream from Tarr Steps is currently closed for safety reasons.  Therefore the circular route cannot be completed.  You can still follow the river upstream on either side as far as the bridge, but you will need to return on the same path.

Additionally, the Two Moors Way follows the western bank from Tarr Steps, passing the Hinds Pitt bridge and continuing to Great Bradley and on to Withypool.

This is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with the chance of seeing red deer, dormice, otters and bats, but mainly at dawn or dusk.
