Exmoor Young Chef Competition Highlights Local Talent and Hospitality Industry Opportunities
The Exmoor Young Chef competition, now in its third year, took place on Saturday, 5th October, at West Somerset Community College. Organised by Visit Exmoor, the event aims to raise awareness of food, local sourcing, and the dynamic career opportunities available in the region’s hospitality industry.
Sponsored by Bidfood and Brend Hotels, with additional support from the Minehead Rotary Club, Butlin’s, Bridgwater & Taunton College, and a host of professional mentor chefs from across the area, the competition provided young culinary talents with an opportunity to showcase their skills in a high-pressure environment. Five finalists – Helaina Sherrin, Tasmine Swallow, Ryan Tolhurst-Gunn, Edward Nosworthy, and Austin Nelder were tasked with creating a three-course meal in just two hours on a budget of £22, using locally sourced ingredients.
The judges were James Jones from Bridgwater & Taunton College and Louise Lyons MacLeod, 2024 MasterChef finalist and runner-up. Their expert feedback provided invaluable insights into the dishes created by the talented young chefs. In addition, renowned restaurant critic and MasterChef judge William Sitwell made an appearance, lending his support to the event and offering inspiration to the finalists.
Austin Nelder emerged as the overall winner and will now go on to participate in the Barnstaple Food Fair. All the finalists have been invited for a celebratory meal at the Quantock Restaurant at Bridgwater & Taunton College, where some of the dishes from the competition will be served. In addition, Butlins’ Academy generously donated a set of professional kitchen knives to each finalist, recognising their hard work and dedication.
Emma Thomasson, CEO of Visit Exmoor, said:
“This competition has become a true showcase of the young talent in our region and highlights the importance of local sourcing and sustainable practices in the culinary world. We are incredibly proud of all the finalists and their passion for cooking. The Exmoor Young Chef competition is about inspiring the next generation and demonstrating the diverse and exciting opportunities in the hospitality sector. Austin’s win is a testament to the hard work and creativity that all the participants have shown.”
Werner Hartholt of Butlins, added:
“It’s always a privilege to mentor and support these talented young chefs. The skills they’ve developed, their creativity, and their ability to work under pressure are remarkable. We look forward to seeing them flourish in their culinary careers and are proud to have played a part in their journey.”
The Exmoor Young Chef competition continues to strengthen ties between the region’s hospitality industry and young aspiring chefs, reinforcing the message that the area offers exciting career opportunities for the next generation.
