The historic market town of South Molton is the perfect base for exploring Exmoor and the beautiful North Devon Coast.
South Molton is pretty market town with a population of around 5,000 people. With its town square a hive of activity, surrounded by small local shops, it retains a very traditional market town feel.
There are many buildings of interest in the town and an insight into the history of these Medieval, Georgian and Elizabethan buildings and the town itself can be found in the Heritage Trail which guides you around the town showing you glimpses of past and present and a wealth of interesting information.
The historical town features a delightful award-winning museum. The Museum is located on the ground floor of the town’s 18th century Guildhall, which was completed in 1743 and is situated on the town square. Collections reflecting the life and times of this historic market town and the surrounding district include local archaeological finds, agricultural implements, items of domestic interest, textiles, documents, maps, toys, and much else besides.
In South Molton there are many dog friendly places to visit and plenty of long walks and short strolls walks for dogs and their owners to enjoy! The tourist information centre can help with information about the Two Moors Way and South West Coast Path. The walks on Exmoor are especially popular with stunning scenery and the wildlife including the Exmoor ponies, the wild red deer and the buzzard hawks circling above.
Take a trip and discover Quince Honey Farm. A working honey farm and a tourist attraction, it offers a great day out for all ages. Join a guided tour of the unique Bee World attraction and see millions of bees (all housed behind protective glass), sample delicious honeys, try your hand at rolling a beeswax candle and get suited up to take part in Be a Beekeeper where you will be guided through the inner workings of a live beehive. Added to that is the large indoor play area and outdoor play area, perfect for the kids to buzz around, Quince Café serving up tasty treats including their special honey cream teas, and the onsite shop selling their range of delicious honey and honey products.
Visit The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. Experience the power of steam travelling through the rolling countryside, with views out to wild moorland and the rugged coastline. Originally opened in 1898 and closed in 1935; what you can see today at Woody Bay is just the beginning of an exciting project to rebuild one of the world’s most famous and picturesque narrow gauge railways; the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
Feeling hungry? South Molton has plenty of places to eat. With traditional Fish & Chips, friendly and cosy pubs serving traditional pub food, and many teashops to indulge in the finest cream teas. There is something to suit all tastes.
Do not miss the local market days! The main market day is on a Thursday with an extra pannier market on Saturdays. They open at 9 a.m. until 2.00 p.m. The Country Market hosts 70 local businesses selling a wide range of locally produced, reared and grown foods, great quality ‘not on the High St’ goods, locally grown plants and flowers, quality antiques and collectibles, an array of talented Artisans and artists, and much more.
The town has all the essential shops and amenities including a supermarket with plentiful parking around the town.
There are various accommodation options within the town and surrounding area. These include hotels, B&B, public house plus plenty self-catering holiday cottages and camping options.
