Bampton is on the Devon/Somerset border near the edge of the Exmoor National Park.
Bampton is set in a wooded valley, a tributary of the Exe valley. Most buildings are of local stone, quarried just outside the edge of the town. Bampton has a warm, friendly and attractive atmosphere and has lovely shops such as an old-fashioned butcher, fruit and veg, and an acclaimed bakery. Several places offer delicious local food at sensible prices.
Bampton is on the Exe Valley Way walking route, and on the West Country Way cycle route.

Local events
Bampton has a Royal Charter granted by Henry III to hold its annual Bampton Charter Fair, on the last Thursday in October. ‘After the Fair’ folk festival, end of October. Other events include a Christmas evening celebration, and ‘Open Day’ in the spring or summer – check web-site for details.
Tourist information
Bampton Heritage & Visitor Centre was opened in 2013 in St Michael’s church in the centre of the town. Modern attractive display boards tell something of the history of the town, display cabinets have a themed display which changes from time to time, and there are activities for children to enjoy. A model of the railway station which used to stand in the town is always a source of great interest. Videos are available to watch such as the Town Trail, the History of the Church, Bampton Railway 1884-1963, and archive photographs.
