The South West Coast Path connects with the Coleridge Way at Lynmouth. This path is the longest of the National Trails, going from Minehead in Somerset round to Poole in Dorset via Land’s End. This is 630 miles long and one of the best walks for its scenery and challenge. For more information go to www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk.
This part of the England Coast Path was opened in March 2016. This path makes quite a contrast to the South West Coast Path, being very flat for most of its distance. It passes through West Somerset’s own Jurassic coast between Hinkley Point and Blue Anchor. This is the same geological strata that one sees on the Dorset coast and has just as many fossils to discover. This path also includes the River Parrett estuary which includes the RSPB National Nature Reserve, perfect for seeing estuarine birds.
For more information on this coast path, go to http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/england-coast-path/plan and then move the map towards the Bristol Channel to then zoom in to the path showing this section of the England Coast Path.
The Two Moors Way also meets the Coleridge Way at Lynmouth. Lynmouth is one of the termini of this 102 mile walk which crosses both Exmoor and Dartmoor. It starts/ends at Ivybridge in South Devon. From here you can walk the Erme Trail to reach the South West Coast Path on the south coast. These routes enable a large circular walk around Devon and Cornwall. For more information go to its website.
The Tarka Trail also meets the Coleridge Way at Lynmouth. This figure-of-eight walk follows the South West Coast Path to Barnstaple. It then follows the Tarka Trail cycleway into mid Devon to Meeth, before returning to footpaths and country lanes to reach the northern edge of Dartmoor. It then returns northwards passing through pretty Devon villages and rolling countryside to reach Eggesford. From here one catches the train on the Tarka Line to Barnstaple. From Barnstaple the trail follows footpaths into the foothills of Exmoor, then crossing it to reach Lynmouth again. For full route details in a PDF go to this website.
