The River Exe rises in Somerset near the village of Simonsbath and wends its way through the beautiful Exmoor landscape. Heading south via an ever-changing spectacle of nature, the river becomes Devon’s most important, flowing through the heart of the city of Exeter to reach the sea some 50 plus miles later at Exmouth on the south coast.
The headwaters of the Exe lie in Exmoor National Park. From its source at Exehead, the river meanders across the moorland, down steeply wooded valleys and besides small settlements and villages offering a huge variety of scenery, even before it leaves the Park.
There’s no better place for a short stroll, good walk or long-distance trek (details here on the Exe Valley Way). Pop in to one of the Exmoor National Park Centres at Dulverton, Dunster or Lynmouth to pick up a map and tips and advice on the best places to walk.
Many ancient bridges span the River Exe including the listed 3 arch structure at Exford and several in the pretty village of Winsford. Photo opportunities abound. The River Exe also provides water for Wimbleball Reservoir and Lake where visitors can enjoy the unspoilt expanse of water on land or afloat.
