West Ilkerton Farm Tours
Explore our beautiful working Exmoor farm and see local breeds of animals at close quarters from the comfort of a tractor-drawn trailer. Families welcome.
West Ilkerton is a 91 hectare Exmoor hill farm situated about 5 km from Lynmouth and the North Devon coast.
Our farm tours take you off-road to places not usually accessible to the public. You will be able to enjoy spectacular ever-changing views and see cattle, sheep and ponies at close quarters from the safety and comfort of our tractor-drawn trailer.
We aim to blend modern knowledge with sustainable farming methods using local breeds that are suited to the area. Devon ('Red Ruby') cattle and Exmoor horn sheep have been bred here in an unbroken line for well over a century, so we are keen to conserve this living link with the past.
The welfare of our animals and conservation of our beautiful farm are very important to us. Our farmhouse is supplied with electricity from a wind turbine and is heated by a biomass boiler that burns wood from our hedges. The farm is in a Higher Level Stewardship agreement, which helps us to conserve a variety of wildlife. We often see wild red deer, as well as butterflies and birds. A highlight for many is visiting our Exmoor ponies.
Our books were inspired by life at West Ilkerton, especially the 'Katy's Ponies' series.
Tours take about 1 1/2 hours. The trailer can take up to 20 people, but no more than 12 will be booked on a standard tour so there's plenty of room and we can give everyone individual attention. BOOKING ESSENTIAL.
Light refreshments can be purchased, including tubs of delicious Devon ice cream and other local produce.
