The Amazing A39
Whilst pretty much all of the roads in and around Exmoor and the Quantocks would compare favourably with a monotonous motorway excursion in the scenic stakes, the A39 between Porlock and Lynmouth surely qualifies as the most breathtaking. Heart-stopping hairpin bends and a shockingly steep gradient make Porlock Hill famous in these parts, but all the more rewarding then to emerge at the top high up on the moors with a panoramic view over the surrounding countryside and out to sea. Taking the open top bus gives you a 360 degree panormama. The road continues through tunnels of weather-sculpted trees and open moorlands where ponies graze oblivious to the light traffic. Hugging the coastline high above the ever-changing blues and greens of the ocean the road dips down and down again into alpine-like Lynmouth where you can enjoy a well-deserved ice-cream.
