Gold ‘Green Tourism’ Award for Wimbleball Lake

Green Tourism is the national sustainable tourism certification scheme for the UK. Businesses opting to join Green Tourism are assessed by a qualified grading advisor against a rigorous set of criteria covering a range of areas, such as energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity and more.

Under the scheme sites are assessed every two years and since 2008 Wimbleball Lake has received Gold. The Green Tourism certification is important in today’s world as consumers are becoming increasingly aware of sustainability-related issues and tourism needs to be sustainable to ensure its future viability.

Wimbleball Lake has done extremely well to retain this award, which reflects the strong commitment that South West Lakes Trust has to sustainable business practices. The qualified assessor for Green Tourism praised the South West Lakes Trust team, recognising the “many excellent green measures in place at Wimbleball” and the ongoing conservation work: “This is what the organisation does best – planting a community orchard, clearing paths, coppicing and volunteer work on site.”

Much is done at Wimbleball to manage, monitor and encourage wildlife throughout the grounds and lake and this is supported with some “excellent interpretation and various related events throughout the year”.

Colin Vallance, the charity’s Heritage and Environment Director said, “The Trust is committed to ensuring that environmental sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.  This award demonstrates just how much has been achieved through the hard work and dedication of our team of employees and volunteers at Wimbleball Lake and we are all extremely proud to have received this recognition for a fourth time.”

Alex Forster, Countryside and Angling Manager at Wimbleball said, “We are delighted with the result and would like to thank all the volunteers who have helped at Wimbleball with activities such as coppicing, charcoal burning and tree planting which helped us to achieve Gold standard. “
