Exmoor Walking Festival

The North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival

Walking festival front coverThis festival started in 2000 and was promptly stopped by the foot and mouth disease. It was delayed until September that year and the restrictions were lifted a few days before the festival was due to run!

Since then the festival has grown, initially with EU Objective 4 funding which was raised through the North Devon Marketing Bureau. The festival reached its peak in 2009 attracting 630 individual walkers to the area. The festival had 78 walks on offer over 10 days.

The economic climate then took its effect on the festival and the festival still runs over 8 days but with about 30 guided walks on offer. As this is the prime market for Exmoor, it is important to keep this festival going as it is an excellent way of promoting the area as a walking destination. The festival gives walkers the confidence to return later to do their own walks. It also gives enough information for people to work out their own walks from the brochure. There are also plenty of walks leaflets available in the tourist information centres.

The festival always runs across the May Day Bank Holiday as it is considered to be the Bank Holiday that is more difficult to get tourists to come, as it is so soon after Easter and before the main May Bank Holiday. The festival attracts 80% women as they enjoy being guided and hearing the additional information given by the guides.

The festival attracts plenty of PR and radio interviews each year. The festival produces its own 24 page brochure which details each walk, ranging from an easy 4 mile walk to a full day 10 mile walk.

You can advertise your business in the festival brochure and on the comprehensive festival website, www.exmoorwalkingfestival.co.uk
