There are five major long-distance trails running through the area, that can be completed on consecutive days, providing the perfect opportunity for a short break. So, why not take advantage of the many bed & breakfasts along the routes?
For shorter walks, a series of Golden Walks guides are available that detail circular walks from 4 to 12 miles in length and take in many of the picturesque towns and villages of the area.
A number of trails have also been set up with themes such as nature, local history and woodland management, some of which have their own special waymarks and signposts.
If you prefer to walk with a group of people whilst learning more about the area, there is a programme of guided walks led by knowledgeable rangers and local guides throughout the year. A full list of events for the year can be found in the Exmoor Visitor newspaper available free of charge from the National Park Centres.
A range of walking guides are available to buy from the National Park Centres and online, giving suggestions and even some personal recommendations for walking routes and places to see, providing the perfect opportunity to leave the car behind and explore parts of Exmoor you may otherwise miss.
With over 1000km of rights of way and 18,000 hectares of open access land available you can also create your own tailor-made routes using the OS Explorer Maps (OL9).
