About

Dramatic river gorge and ancient woodland in stunning surroundings, with a historic tea-room at its heart.

Take a stroll around the 2,000 acres of Watersmeet and Countisbury, a haven for wildlife with breathtaking views. Situated on Exmoor, Watersmeet is the meeting place of the East Lyn River and Hoar Oak Water, it is surrounded by the rich woodlands of the Lyn Valley.

The historic building at the centre of the valley holds the Watersmeet tea-room and has been serving cream teas as far back as 1900. Nothing beats a good hot drink after a walk and this tea-room is the ideal spot for some refreshment. Our tea and coffee are from fairtrade suppliers. We’ve also got a great range of herbal teas, and for a real treat, we do a luxurious hot chocolate. Of course, we are also famous for our cream teas – delicious any time of year.

The West Exmoor ranger team who look after the area around Watersmeet look after around 1200 acres of woodland, an area roughly the size of 16000 tennis courts containing a staggering 400,000(ish) trees. These woods are protected by special designations for their rare species of moss, lichen and ground flora, and form an important habitat for many species of wildlife, making them a great location for wildlife spotting, bird watching or simply enjoying the great outdoors.

Mobility parking (with a drop off 20 yards from the tea-room) by arrangement in advance with tea-room at Watersmeet House – 01598 753348.  There are also toilets located next to the tea-room.
