About

Porlock Bay Oysters is an award-winning oyster farm situated in Porlock Weir’s historic harbour, an area with the proud tradition of oyster farming going back more than 100 years. It started in 1830; the oysters became very well-known across the country. Unfortunately, harvesting native oysters died out in the 1890s due to overfishing.

Oyster farming in Porlock Weir was revived in 2013 as a part of a community project in a bid to bring jobs and tourism to the village. Now independently owned, Porlock Bay Oysters have gained a national reputation for their unique flavour and can be found in the top restaurants across the country. The latest achievement is Gold Medal awarded by Taste of the West Awards.

High in protein, vitamin C, omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, zinc and iron, yet low in cholesterol, fat and calories; oysters are one of the most natural, healthy and nutritional foods you can eat. They grow without additives in the fresh, clear sea water of Porlock Bay. Hand-picked at low tide, the oysters are then purified in specially built tanks at a fishery in Porlock Weir to ensure they are in perfect condition.

Porlock Bay Oysters’ harvest site in Porlock Bay has attained the top ‘A’ classification from the Food Standard Agency and were the first site in England and Wales to have this accreditation.

The oysters can be bought on the website www.porlockbayoysters.co.uk and delivered with overnight courier service or click&collect at the fishery at Porlock Weir.
