Horse Riding on Exmoor
Exmoor Forest is a former royal hunting ground, where horse riders can experience some of the best riding in the country.
Accommodation and stables
There are stables that can cater for experienced riders, novices and family groups. Most will offer the opportunity to ride in the national park, with an experienced guide or ride leader. Tuition is usually available for beginners or those who want to improve. To find accommodation with stables go to Where to Stay, choose the type of accommodation you want and then Filter Results for Stabling.
Variety of riding
A ride on Exmoor may travel over the spectacular heather clad moorland, through ancient oak woodlands, along tumbling river valleys or through some of Exmoor's unique farmland. You will get closer to nature and are more likely to see the Exmoor's wildlife when riding on a horse. Perhaps you will catch a glimpse of red deer, Exmoor ponies or a buzzard soaring in the sky. The views are always stunning and ever changing.
Miles of bridleways
If you are an experienced rider then Exmoor is a very special place, with over 400 miles of well maintained bridleways. You can enjoy the freedom of a fast canter on the open moorland as well as the challenge of riding through water crossings and up and down the hills. Perhaps you have your own horse that would enjoy a holiday too, look out for accommodation that also offers stabling.
Stables for beginners
Beginners and novices are well catered for too, as many stables have a selection of horses to cater for different abilities. Most of the stables are located away from the busy roads, so you don't even have to worry about any of Exmoor's low-density traffic.
Horses on Exmoor
Horses have long been an important part of the local culture, whether used for delivering the post, hacking on the moor, hunting or for work around the farm. Occasionally you will see the farmers checking or moving their sheep from the back of their horse. Today, and throughout the year, you will invariably see people enjoying their riding on Exmoor and you will also find a selection of horse shows and events.
