Industrial Heritage

Iron-ore was once seriously, if briefly, mined in the beautiful Brendon Hills high on Exmoor in the second half of the 19th century. The villages built to house the miners and their families have all but disappeared and the 80 or so mineshafts have been abandoned, but the route of the West Somerset Mineral Railway can still be clearly identified as it wends its way 12 miles from the hills to the sea at Watchet. Visitors can still marvel at The Incline, a 1 in 4 slope where an ingenious cabling system once lowered and hauled trucks up and down the steep landscape and explore the remains of the cable winding house at Raleigh’s Cross. The Exmoor Society and the Exmoor National Park Authority often run guided walks and talks for an in-depth glimpse into Exmoor’s industrial past.
