Love it or hate it ‘Verity’, Damien Hirst’s controversial gift to the town of Ilfracombe is here to stay, well for the next 20 years anyway. On loan from the British artist who lives nearby, the gleaming bronze-clad figure of a young pregnant woman stands 66 feet tall at the seaward entrance to the town harbour. Holding the sword and scales of justice and supported by a pile of law books, one half of the woman’s skin has been peeled back to reveal the bone, sinews and womb with her unborn child inside. A modern allegory of truth & justice, the statue has certainly encouraged more visitors to Ilfracombe and provided the basis of many a heated discussion. Come and see what you think.
