A Noble Sport

Exmoor National Park has a rich resident bird population and twitchers hoping to spot a bird of prey should look out for buzzards, sparrowhawks, kestrels, peregrines and possibly merlins, all of which live and breed in the park. Actually flying these magnificent birds takes a steady nerve, and hand.  The centuries-old sport of falconry was something of a status symbol in medieval times when it was noblemen, with plenty of time, space and money, who would keep and fly birds to show off their sporting prowess. Luckily for us, there are a couple of places that offer the chance to have a go without having to marry into royalty. Try www.northdevonhawkwalks.co.uk or www.exmoorfalconry.co.uk
