About the magazine
Although Exmoor is one of Britain’s smallest national parks, it is one of only a tiny handful that is supported and promoted by a dedicated independent magazine. As stylish as any top-end glossy, Exmoor Magazine is seasonal, topical and relevant, reporting on the moor and reflecting its moods and communities like broadsheet meets diarist meets landscape artist.
Conceived in the mid-1990s by Halsgrove Books, it was edited for 13 years by much-loved local historian, the late Hilary Binding. The current editor and part owner, Naomi Cudmore, made her first contribution in the second edition and describes it as an honour to have stepped into Hilary’s editing role. The magazine remains proudly independent and, unlike many chain-owned publications, is written, photographed, owned and run right here on Exmoor.
As a journalist writing in a recent edition of the National Park’s newspaper, Park Life, concluded: “The success of Exmoor Magazine comes back again to the vision and its focus on stories. There is never any shortage of new material to fascinate and entertain. The team applauds its local and loyal advertisers, its group of talented writers, proofreaders and photographers and a band of extras who battle though the snow to make sure readers are not disappointed. The joint effort consistently delivers an interesting, high-quality work of art that manages to be both fun and informative and is exceptionally pleasing to the eye. The attention to detail puts the finished result among the upper echelons of quality publications that will never become tomorrow’s chip paper but prevail instead on the timeless shelves of our family bookcases.”
